SEO vs GEO: What changes when optimizing for AI search

A brand can rank well on Google and still lose ground during the discovery stage. Some searches now end within AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and other interfaces that synthesize sources before users ever visit a website. Organic visibility can no longer be measured by a list of links alone.

A December 2024 Bain-Dynata survey of 1,117 US consumers found that about 80% used zero-click results for at least 40% of their searches. Bain also estimated a 15% to 25% decline in organic traffic under this scenario. The sample does not represent every market, but it shows why rankings and traffic alone no longer capture the full picture of visibility.

This shift has fueled the SEO vs GEO debate. The two practices share the same foundations but focus on different surfaces and signals. Google still considers optimization for its generative search features part of SEO. Across other platforms, GEO helps organize access controls, visibility in answers, citations, and platform-specific measurement. The real decision is not which acronym to choose, but how to build a strategy that works across both forms of discovery.

SEO vs GEO: What is the difference?

The difference begins with where discovery takes place. SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, improves the visibility and performance of pages in search engines.

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, optimizes content and tracks whether a source is included, mentioned, or cited in AI-generated answers.

Another acronym has also gained traction in the content industry: AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization. It makes content easier to understand and surface in direct answers and AI-powered experiences.

SEO, GEO, and AEO share the same foundation, but they optimize content for different discovery and answer environments. This affects how content is delivered, which controls are available, and how visibility is measured.

Do AEO and GEO replace SEO?

No. AEO and GEO complement SEO, but they do not replace its foundations. These practices are best understood as operational extensions of a broader discipline.

Google’s official guide states that AI Overviews and AI Mode use Search’s core quality, ranking, and retrieval systems. Google therefore treats AEO and GEO as industry terms for work that remains within SEO. In this context, its AI experiences are still search experiences.

There is no separate technical track that can replace crawling, indexing, useful content, and quality. Google also emphasizes that authoritative, in-depth content remains the strongest approach.

Are there universal GEO practices?

Not yet. The term gained an academic framework in a study published at KDD 2024. The paper proposed visibility metrics for synthesized answers and showed that the impact of different techniques varied by domain.

This variation is an important limitation: GEO describes a real visibility challenge, but it does not yet offer a universal formula. Companies should be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed tactics.

AEO typically prioritizes concise answers that are easy to extract. GEO examines how different sources are combined into a synthesized response. SEO covers the infrastructure that makes those sources discoverable and accessible. A single well-structured section can support all three disciplines, provided the page also meets the technical requirements of each environment.

How AI search selects sources to cite

Understanding SEO vs GEO requires understanding how retrieval works. Google’s documentation describes two techniques that connect generated answers to the search index. They help explain why SEO foundations still shape the outcome.

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)

Google describes retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), also known as grounding, as a technique that uses its core ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date pages from the index. The model then analyzes those pages to generate a more reliable answer, with clickable links that support its claims.

The answer is built from pages Google has already deemed worthy of ranking, reconnecting AI visibility with traditional content quality and indexability.

Query fan-out

The second technique is query fan-out. According to Google, the model generates several related queries at once to gather more context.

The example in its documentation starts with a question about removing weeds from a lawn and launches parallel searches on herbicides, chemical-free removal, and prevention. A single user question triggers multiple searches behind the scenes, giving in-depth content more opportunities to be retrieved.

Because retrieval depends on content being indexed and accessible, the technical foundation matters as much as the content itself. Why SEO remains the foundation of AI search optimization

Generative engines change how information is presented, but they still depend on accessible, interpretable content. On Google, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a search result snippet before it can be considered for AI features.

Meeting these requirements, however, does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or visibility. Eligibility opens the door. Relevance and quality determine whether the page becomes part of the answer.

  • Crawling and indexing: Check robots.txt, HTTP status codes, canonical tags, sitemaps, and accidental blocks. A strong technical foundation for an enterprise CMS helps keep content, metadata, and URLs under governance.

  • Content available in HTML: Make sure the core information can be processed even when the interface uses JavaScript. Complex rendering increases the number of elements that need to be tested.

  • Site architecture and internal links: Connect pages by topic and purpose. An important URL without internal links loses discovery paths and context within the website.

  • Distinctive content: Include firsthand experience, criteria, data, verifiable examples, and context-dependent decisions. Rewriting the internet’s general consensus adds little value for readers or systems that can already summarize common information.

  • Page experience: Keep content easy to read across devices, reduce latency, and separate the main information from elements competing for attention. The page must still deliver when users decide to explore the answer further.

What GEO adds to SEO

A shared foundation does not eliminate differences between platforms. Google, ChatGPT, and other engines have their own crawling policies, ways of displaying sources, and levels of performance transparency. GEO adds a platform-specific layer of observation without creating a strategy disconnected from SEO.

  • Platform-specific controls: OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search features. It can be allowed even when GPTBot, which is associated with the potential use of content for model training, is blocked.

  • Self-contained passages: Answer early, make the subject explicit, provide context, and place evidence close to the claim it supports. The goal is to reduce ambiguity without turning the article into disconnected blocks.

  • Coverage of complex questions: Organize content around the decisions that make up the problem. A page about content management systems can address architecture, governance, and editorial operations within the same scope when those elements share the same intent.

  • Verifiable brand presence: Connect entities to real sources, authors, case studies, and official company pages. Editorial distribution and legitimate mentions expand the available context. Artificial placements do not guarantee visibility.

  • Citation and reference measurement: Track which URLs and brands appear, for which questions, and how consistently. These data points must be considered alongside traffic, conversions, and business impact.

How to measure SEO and GEO without confusing visibility with results

A brand cited in an answer may not earn a click. A high-ranking page may attract visitors who do not move forward in the customer journey. Measurement must distinguish technical eligibility, answer visibility, traffic, and business impact.

The Google Search Console generative AI performance report is still rolling out. OpenAI states that referral links in ChatGPT automatically include utm_source=chatgpt.com. As platform reporting matures, combine native data, analytics, and documented samples of relevant questions.

The analysis must also account for digital experience and its impact on conversion. If the content attracts the right audience but the page is slow, confusing, or disconnected from the next step, visibility will not translate into growth.

When GEO deserves a dedicated workstream

Not every company needs to immediately build a GEO operation, hire a dedicated vendor, or allocate a separate budget.   • The customer journey involves complex research: Customers compare criteria, solutions, and providers before speaking with the company.

  • Expert knowledge is available for publication: Subject matter experts, case studies, research, and methods can support content that goes beyond compiling external sources.

  • The brand competes for consideration across several platforms: Google, ChatGPT, and other environments already play a role in category discovery.

  • The team can learn from the data: A digital performance strategy connects visibility, experience, and conversion through ongoing cycles of diagnosis and improvement.
